The numbers are in, and they might surprise you – so, while Las Vegas grabs headlines and Macau counts its billions, the real casino champions aren’t who you’d expect. Australians actually lose more money gambling than anyone else on Earth. They dropped $1,527 per person last year, which is double what Hong Kong residents lost and more than triple what Americans spent.

Australia Leads in Gambling Losses – $244 Billion Wagered in One Year

Australians bet $244 billion in 2022-2023 – but not million, billion. They lost $31 billion of it, which works out to those $1,527 losses per person. The next closest is Hong Kong at $768 per capita, while Americans only lost $421 each, despite having casinos in 40 states.

But what really makes Australia different is that it puts poker machines everywhere – the country owns 20% of all poker machines in the world, and 80% sit outside casinos. So, walk into any pub in New South Wales and you’ll find them. That state alone runs 91,675 machines, which is 10% of all the poker machines on the planet. Nearly 73% of Australian adults gambled last year, and more than a third gamble every week.

Malaysia’s Genting Highlands Brought $376 Million in Q3 2024

Malaysia runs a fascinating system that’s producing some serious growth, and Malaysia only has one legal casino, Resorts World Genting, but it’s massive. The property pulled in MYR1.68 billion ($376.6 million) just in Q3 2024.

Genting sits in the highlands about an hour from Kuala Lumpur. It runs 24/7 with 3,000 slot machines, 400 electronic table games, and 30 live gaming tables – and the Malaysian government takes 35% of gross gaming revenue in taxes (up from 25% a few years ago), plus charges a RM150 million annual license fee.

But here’s where it gets interesting – while Genting leads the entire land-based gambling field, online sites have taken over, serving millions of players each day. For international visitors and locals looking for more and better games, casino sites for Malaysian players bring everything from live dealer games to sports betting, bridging traditional Asian games with Western favorites. The turn toward online is especially important because younger Malaysians prefer that way – and their demographic is pretty young.

Macau’s Casinos Won $28.3 Billion Despite Missing 2019’s Peak

Macau remains the revenue king, getting more than $28 billion in the past year. Well, that’s up 23.9% from 2023, but still way below the $36.5 billion peak in 2019. The city runs 41 casinos – 24 on the peninsula, 17 in Cotai. The Venetian Macao alone covers 550,000 square feet of gaming floor.

But Macau’s changing fast, though – and China’s government cracked down on VIP gambling and junket operators. So, when they sentenced Suncity’s boss, Alvin Chau, to 18 years in prison, the high-roller era ended. Casinos now chase middle-class tourists instead of whales, while also adding concerts, shopping, family attractions – anything to make it more fun than just baccarat tables.

Speaking of baccarat, it still leads the way, bringing more than $13 billion in 2023. But slot machines are only 5% of Macau’s revenue, as Chinese gamblers love skill games much more than pure luck.

But even though President Xi Jinping keeps pushing Macau to diversify its economy, gaming is still 80% of Macau’s tax revenue – and that dependence makes Beijing pretty nervous.

Nevada Sets Records While Las Vegas Strip Revenue Drops

Nevada casinos hit $15.6 billion in revenue for 2024, their fourth straight record. But here’s the thing – the Las Vegas Strip actually fell 1%. The Strip brought in $8.8 billion, down from $8.9 billion in 2023, while Baccarat revenue dropped 7%, killing the Strip’s growth.

The real winners are literally everywhere else in Nevada. Downtown Las Vegas jumped 2.4% to $931.2 million – and the rest of Clark County surged 10.6% to $1.9 billion. Durango Casino opened in December 2023 and helped push those numbers. Even Reno grew 3% to $758.8 million.

Las Vegas hosted 41.7 million visitors in 2024, while the airport handled 58.4 million passengers. But gaming only makes up 26% of Strip casino income now – hotels generate 34%, restaurants bring in 18.5%. The Strip transformed into an entertainment complex that happens to have casinos, and not the other way around.

Real Casino Capital Depends on How You Count

So who wins? Macau has the most revenue, while Australia loses the most per person. Also, America has the most casinos, but Malaysia grows the fastest in Southeast Asia. Each country has its own gambling culture based on regulations, traditions, and what citizens actually want.
