Cockfighting, known as “đá gà” in Vietnamese, is a centuries-old blood sport where two roosters are pitted against each other in a brutal fight, often to the death. One of the most well-known hubs for this activity is Thomo, a border town between Vietnam and Cambodia. “Đá gà Thomo” (or “da ga Thomo” in English-transliterated Vietnamese) has become a widely recognized term, especially among fans and bettors in the region and even internationally.

What is Đá Gà Thomo?

“Đá gà Thomo” literally translates to “Thomo cockfighting.” Thomo is the Vietnamese pronunciation of “Svay Rieng Province,” located just over the Cambodian border. This area is famous for organizing cockfights that attract spectators and gamblers from both Cambodia and Vietnam.

While cockfighting is illegal in Vietnam, it is legal and regulated in Cambodia, particularly in designated areas like Thomo. This makes the Thomo region a hotspot for cross-border cockfighting events.

Why Thomo? Location and Popularity

Thomo’s strategic location near the Vietnam-Cambodia border makes it ideal for Vietnamese gamblers to easily cross into Cambodia where cockfighting is permitted. The fights usually take place in specially designated arenas known as “trường gà”, or cockpits.

Key Factors Behind Thomo’s Popularity:

  • Legal Loophole: While Vietnam prohibits cockfighting, gamblers can still indulge legally just across the border.
  • Professional Arenas: Thomo has developed organized cockfighting rings with seating, schedules, and even live commentary.
  • Online Broadcasting: Many Thomo cockfights are now live-streamed, making them accessible worldwide.
  • High-Stakes Gambling: Bets can range from a few dollars to thousands, attracting both casual fans and serious bettors.

Types of Cockfighting in Thomo

There are typically two main types of cockfighting in Thomo:

  1. Đá gà đòn (Weaponless Cockfighting): This is more traditional and involves roosters fighting without blades. These matches can last for hours and are seen more in northern Vietnam.
  2. Đá gà cựa sắt (Bladed Cockfighting): This is the dominant form in Thomo. Roosters are fitted with small, sharp blades or gaffs tied to their legs. These fights are intense and usually end quickly due to the high injury risk.

Training and Breeding of Fighting Roosters

Raising a fighting rooster is considered both an art and a science. Breeders in Thomo and nearby areas take great pride in producing strong, agile, and aggressive birds.

Key Aspects of Cockfighting Rooster Preparation:

  • Selective Breeding: Only the strongest bloodlines are used.
  • Nutrition: Roosters are fed high-protein diets and supplements.
  • Training: Includes running, wing flapping, and sparring to enhance stamina.
  • Mental Conditioning: Roosters are trained to be aggressive and not back down.

Gambling and Betting in Đá Gà Thomo

Gambling is a major driver of Thomo’s cockfighting economy. Spectators place bets either in-person or via online platforms that stream live fights from Thomo arenas.

Popular Betting Options:

  • Win/Lose Bets: Bet on the red or blue corner.
  • Over/Under Time Bets: Predict the duration of the fight.
  • Handicap Bets: Adjusted odds for stronger or weaker roosters.

Most bets are placed in Vietnamese dong (VND) or US dollars, and informal money exchanges are widespread near the arenas.

Online Đá Gà Thomo: The Digital Transformation

With the rise of internet technology, đá gà thomo has become extremely popular. Websites and streaming platforms now offer:

  • Live video feeds of Thomo fights
  • Real-time betting
  • Rooster stats and betting tips
  • Community forums and predictions

This digital expansion has extended Thomo’s reach beyond local borders, attracting cockfighting enthusiasts from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and even the United States.

Legal and Ethical Concerns

Despite its popularity, đá gà Thomo remains controversial due to:

1. Animal Cruelty:

Animal rights organizations criticize the sport for its violent nature and the suffering inflicted on the roosters. Bladed cockfights often result in severe injuries or death.

2. Illegal Gambling:

While cockfighting itself is legal in Cambodia, illegal betting operations linked to Thomo have been uncovered in Vietnam and online.

3. Smuggling and Trafficking:

Cross-border movement of fighting roosters, gambling money, and even people raises concerns about trafficking and organized crime.

Cultural Significance of Cockfighting

Despite the controversies, cockfighting holds deep cultural roots in Southeast Asia. In rural Vietnam and Cambodia, cockfighting is a social and traditional activity, often associated with holidays like Tết (Vietnamese New Year).

Roosters are symbols of bravery, masculinity, and luck, and their fights are seen as a display of strength and honor.

Conclusion

Đá gà Thomo, or da ga Thomo, is much more than a gambling activity — it is a cultural, economic, and now digital phenomenon that straddles legality and tradition. While it continues to thrive, it remains under the scrutiny of both governments and animal welfare organizations.

For fans, it’s an electrifying sport full of excitement and risk. For critics, it’s a barbaric relic of the past. Either way, Thomo cockfighting remains one of the most intriguing and polarizing spectacles in Southeast Asia.
