Football – The Nation’s Favorite Sport

The popularity of a sport is always a sign that a lot of people are betting on it too—just like football here in Singapore. How can you take that away from Singaporeans when the stats don’t lie about how much they love it?

Statistics show that 70% of sports bets made in Singapore are mainly on soccer games. On top of that, 43% of Singaporeans watch the English Premier League (EPL) every season—which indicates that football remains the most-watched league by Singaporeans.

When it comes to betting markets, there are a few that people often use. One of these is the “final result” market, where you predict the outcome of the match—whether it’s a win, loss, or draw.

Another popular one is the “over/under 2.5 goals” market, where you bet on whether the total goals in the match will be higher or lower than 2.5. And then there’s the “both teams to score” (BTTS) market, where you bet that both teams will score at least one goal during the game.

Basketball – NBA’s Global Influence

In Southeast Asia, the Philippines is the top country when it comes to basketball fanbase. But in Singapore, while basketball isn’t as popular as football, the NBA (National Basketball Association) still stands as the strongest league that locals bet on. If we’re talking about teams, you probably know the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Boston Celtics, right? They’re some of the teams that are super exciting to watch.

The regular season has 2,460 games in total that you can bet on, and that’s not including the playoffs and NBA Finals, where the number of bettors is even higher.

Also, the FIBA World Cup is another prestigious league that gets a lot of bets here. In fact, there are some of the best sportsbooks in Singapore that offer great odds and even exclusive promotions for events like this.

For those who don’t know, the NBA has a partnership with StarHub, which has been bringing seven live NBA games every week since 2019. So when it comes to basketball betting, the common types of bets people usually place are point spreads, totals (over/under), and moneyline bets.

Esports – A New Entertainment for Younger Generations

Here in Singapore, the government is fully backing the growth of esports in the country, especially by supporting the setup of esports events.

Back in 2021, Singaporeans saw esports bringing in over SGD 20 million in revenue, and honestly, many didn’t expect it to blow up the way it did. Titles like Mobile Legends, Dota 2, League of Legends, and PUBG became massive hits, attracting huge audiences, especially among the younger crowd aged 16 to 34.

They’re the ones who are super active in the esports scene. And here’s another interesting thing: according to reports, over 30% of esports fans here in Singapore place bets on esports leagues.

The global esports betting market was worth around $17 billion back in 2022, and it’s expected to hit nearly $24 billion this year. Honestly, that’s not surprising, especially with over six million people placing bets on esports in the last 2023 alone.

Esports betting is also one-of-a-kind! And it goes beyond predicting match winners. You can also bet on who will get the first kill or “first blood,” who will destroy the first tower, the total number of kills, and even match betting on how many maps a team will win.

Tennis – An Individual Sport Game

Tennis is super interesting in Singapore, and it really gives off a “luxury” vibe. Usually, there are three types of courts used: clay, artificial grass, and hard floor.

The most popular events to follow when it comes to betting are the grand slam tournaments. If you want to place bets on tennis, your top choices would be Wimbledon, the US Open, the Australian Open, and the French Open.

Tennis actually ranked at number 7 on the overall online search interest scale. In fact, as recently as 2023, there have been 205,700 court bookings in the city-state alone.

There are a lot of sportsbooks in Singapore offering great odds for these events, not just for the Grand Slam tournaments, but also for ATP and WTA events. So, you have plenty of ways to follow this sport, especially with live coverage available, like through StarHub.

Cricket – One of the Biggest Sports in South Asia

While cricket’s popularity is well-known in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, it is also gaining ground in Singapore as well. The actual number of cricket fans here remains to be seen yet as an indication of its popularity, but a lot of people are indeed keenly curious about the game, like really interested, like even when it comes to betting.

According to a report from the Singapore Cricket Association, more than 5,000 players participate in the various divisions and junior leagues. That gives a good indication of just how vibrant the cricket community is here.

So, no matter which Singapore sportsbook you check out, cricket is always going to be one of the options you can bet on. And just like with other sports, there are different betting markets for cricket too, like top batsman, win toss, innings runs, man of the match, series winner, and top bowler.
