ACP Panel Selection Guide for Commercial Facades

What is an ACP panel?

An ACP panel is a flat cladding board built from two thin aluminum sheets bonded to a solid core. ACP stands for aluminum composite panel, and United States code documents call the same product MCM, short for metal composite material. Total thickness is normally 3 mm, 4 mm, or 6 mm, and each aluminum face measures between 0.3 mm and 0.5 mm. The exterior wall chapter of the International Building Code governs how these panels may be used on a commercial building.

Composite construction is what separates the product from ordinary sheet metal. The bonded core holds the two skins apart, so the panel resists bending better than a single sheet of the same weight. A polyethylene-core panel at 4 mm weighs roughly 1.1 pounds per square foot, which keeps facade dead load low on tall elevations. Fabricators cut, groove, and fold the sheets into trays, so column covers, soffits, and shaped returns come from the same stock material.

Which core type belongs on a commercial facade?

Core type is the one specification line that decides where a panel may legally go. Three core families dominate commercial work, and they differ in mineral content, weight, and fire behavior.

• Polyethylene core: a solid thermoplastic center, roughly 5.5 kilograms per square meter at 4 mm, common on signage, canopies, and low-rise elements.
• Fire-retardant core: a polymer blended with mineral filler, near 7.6 kilograms per square meter at 4 mm, specified across most mid-rise and high-rise assemblies.
• Mineral core: a center that is more than 90 percent mineral, close to 8.8 kilograms per square meter at 4 mm, classified A2-s1,d0 under EN 13501-1.

Weight differences change more than shipping cost. A heavier mineral core needs a stiffer support grid and larger fasteners, so the substructure gets repriced before the first sheet arrives. Core substitution after bid award is the most expensive change in the sequence, because the fire test evidence and the attachment design both belong to the original core.

How do fire codes govern facade cladding?

Fire codes control ACP panel use through two separate tests, one on the material and one on the assembly. ASTM E84 measures surface burning characteristics. A Class A result requires a flame spread index of 25 or less, with a smoke developed index of 450 or less. NFPA 285 works differently: it burns a full two-story wall mock-up and records whether flame travels vertically through the wall build-up.

NFPA 285 evidence belongs to the tested assembly, not to the panel. The code triggers that test when a wall in a noncombustible construction type carries combustible components. A passing report names the exact core, insulation, water-resistive barrier, and attachment used in the test, and swapping any layer voids the result. Teams that treat the report as a panel certificate find the gap during plan review. The authority having jurisdiction, meaning the local code official, then asks for a matching listing.

What do the panel specifications actually control?

Panel specifications translate into service life, so every line on a data sheet maps to a physical outcome. The table below pairs the common specification lines with the behavior each one governs and with the values seen on commercial facades.

Specification line	What it controls	Typical commercial value
Core type	Fire classification and code path	Fire-retardant or mineral core
Total thickness	Panel stiffness and span	4 mm, 6 mm on wide spans
Skin thickness	Dent resistance and flatness	0.5 mm per face
Coating chemistry	Color and gloss retention	70 percent PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) resin
Coating specification	Weathering performance level	AAMA 2605
Bond integrity	Resistance to delamination	Peel strength per ASTM D1781
Attachment method	Water management strategy	Route and return cassette

Coating specification is the line buyers most often read past. AAMA 2605, maintained by the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance, requires ten years of South Florida exposure testing, while AAMA 2604 requires five years. A finish that meets only an entry level specification can chalk and fade long before the panel itself fails, which turns a color decision into a repainting schedule.

How do attachment systems change long term performance?

Attachment systems decide how the wall handles water, and two approaches dominate. A wet-sealed system fills every panel joint with sealant, so the joint line becomes the primary water barrier. A rainscreen system leaves joints open or gasketed and drains water through a cavity behind the panel. The real barrier then sits on the wall face behind the cladding, protected from sunlight.

Sealant service life sets the maintenance clock in a wet-sealed facade. Joint sealants commonly carry warranties of ten to twenty years, well short of the finish warranty on the panel, so the owner inherits a recaulking cycle. Route and return fabrication grooves the back skin and core, then folds the panel into a rigid tray. That folded edge stiffens the cassette and lets the joint absorb movement without stressing the panel face.

Which loads must an ACP panel carry?

Loads on a facade panel come from wind and from temperature, and both are calculated before fabrication starts. Wind pressures follow ASCE 7, which assigns higher design pressures at building corners than in the field of a wall. Testing laboratories then load the assembly under uniform static air pressure using ASTM E330, so panel size and fastener spacing become engineering outputs rather than aesthetic choices.

Thermal movement is the quieter load. Aluminum expands about 13 millionths of an inch per inch for each degree Fahrenheit, so a 10-foot panel grows roughly 5/32 inch across a 100 degree swing. Joint width and clip design absorb that growth. A joint detailed too tight pushes the movement into the panel face and produces visible waviness, called oil canning.

Who fabricates and installs the panel?

Fabrication and installation control the tolerance chain that runs from shop drawing to finished joint. Panel manufacturers sell sheets, while fabricators groove, fold, and hang the cassettes, and the two roles often sit in separate companies. Vision Art Aluminium, a Montclair, New Jersey contractor serving New Jersey and New York, lists polyethylene and mineral-filled core options for its acp panel work. Core detail published at that level is what lets a reviewer compare two bids on the same basis. A split scope between supplier and installer adds a handoff where field dimensions and sequencing get lost.

What gets missed in commercial ACP specifications?

Specification gaps surface during submittal review, and the same items repeat from project to project. The list below covers the omissions that most often force a redesign after award.

1. A fire test report that names a different insulation or barrier than the wall being built.
2. Core written as fire rated, with no classification, test method, or listing number.
3. Joint width fixed for appearance before thermal movement is calculated.
4. Coating called out by color and gloss only, with no AAMA performance level.
5. Substructure spacing carried over from an earlier project with different wind pressures.
6. Warranty paperwork that covers the finish but never mentions bond integrity.

Which ACP panel option fits your project?

ACP panel selection narrows on height and construction type before any aesthetic decision enters. Walls that fall under the assembly testing path need a core with a matching NFPA 285 listing, which removes polyethylene from the shortlist on most commercial elevations. Signage, canopies, and low-rise elements outside that path still run polyethylene cores at lower weight and lower cost.

Three findings carry the rest of the decision. Coating specification level, not color, sets how the facade reads in year fifteen. Joint strategy sets the maintenance budget, since a wet-sealed wall schedules recaulking that a drained cavity wall does not. Fabrication scope sets the tolerance risk, because the party folding the cassette is the party that owns the fit at the corner.

This guide is informational and does not replace code review by a licensed design professional. Fire classifications, assembly listings, and wind design values differ by jurisdiction and by code edition. Verify current requirements with the local code official before specifying a facade panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ACP panel made of?

An ACP panel is made of two aluminum skins, normally 0.5 mm each, bonded to a core of polyethylene, mineral-filled polymer, or mineral material. Total thickness on commercial facades is usually 4 mm. The core sets fire classification and weight, while the aluminum skins carry the coating and the visible finish.

Which core is required on a high-rise facade?

High-rise facades in noncombustible construction require a wall assembly with a passing NFPA 285 report, which in practice means a fire-retardant or mineral core. The listing must match the built assembly, including insulation and water-resistive barrier. Polyethylene cores remain in use on signage and on low-rise elements outside that code path.

How long does an ACP facade last?

An ACP facade lasts as long as its weakest layer, and that layer is rarely the aluminum. Finish warranties on 70 percent PVDF coatings commonly run twenty to thirty years. Joint sealant in a wet-sealed system is usually replaced first, on a ten to twenty year cycle, while a drained cavity shifts that maintenance off the joint line.

What is the difference between ACP and MCM?

ACP and MCM describe the same construction under two naming conventions. ACP means aluminum composite panel, the term used across the supply market. MCM means metal composite material, the term used in United States building code text, and it also covers composite panels faced with metals other than aluminum. Submittal packages often carry both terms.

How is oil canning controlled on flat panels?

Oil canning is visible waviness in a flat metal surface, and it is managed through stiffness and detailing rather than repair. Thicker skins, a stiffer core, tighter substructure spacing, and a folded cassette edge all reduce it. Low gloss finishes and lighter colors make any remaining waviness harder to see under raking sunlight.
