Performance guides usually present twenty changes as equally important. They are not. Some take thirty seconds and transform how the game feels; others take an hour and produce a difference you will never notice.

This is organised by time investment. Start at the top, stop wherever you like — everything above where you stop will already have been worth doing.

Fifteen minutes

These four changes account for most of the available improvement on a typical machine.

Check your refresh rate. Open display settings, find advanced display, and confirm your monitor is running at its maximum. Windows frequently defaults lower and never mentions it. Anyone with a fast monitor who has never checked this has a decent chance of finding it running at 60Hz.

Set the power plan to high performance. Particularly on laptops, where the default deliberately limits performance to preserve battery. Keep it plugged in while playing.

Disable overlays. Chat applications, storefronts, capture software and graphics utilities all inject a layer into the rendering path. Turn them off individually in each application’s settings — most people are running three or four without having chosen any.

Close what is running in the background. Browsers with many tabs are the usual offender. While in Task Manager, use the startup tab to permanently disable things that do not need to launch with the computer.

One hour

Update graphics drivers from the manufacturer’s site. System updates lag behind, and driver releases frequently include real optimisation work for specific titles.

Reduce the expensive graphics settings first. Shadow quality and anti-aliasing consume a disproportionate share of the frame budget and contribute nothing to spotting an opponent. Ambient lighting effects are the third. Reduce these before touching anything else.

Leave the cheap ones alone. Texture quality is bounded mainly by graphics memory and is often nearly free. Texture filtering costs almost nothing on modern hardware. Reducing these first — a common habit — sacrifices image quality for negligible gain.

Cap your frame rate. Counterintuitive but genuinely effective. Setting a cap slightly below your typical maximum produces steadier frame delivery and keeps the machine cooler, preventing the thermal throttling that causes sudden mid-match drops.

Turn off vertical sync. It removes screen tearing at the cost of input latency. Tearing is cosmetic; latency is not.

One evening

This is the deepest layer and the one most players skip.

Launch options. Parameters passed to the game before the engine initialises, controlling decisions made during startup that the settings menu cannot reach afterwards. Add them via Properties in your Steam library.

Because parameter names changed between engine versions, a great deal of the advice online was written for the previous game and no longer applies. Checking current documentation of the best cs2 launch options before applying anything is the difference between a working configuration and one assembled from obsolete forum posts.

Add them one at a time and test after each. If the game stops launching, empty the field, confirm it starts, and rebuild individually.

Console commands and a config file. What to skip

Registry cleaners and optimisation utilities do nothing useful and occasionally cause problems.

Overclocking is real but requires monitoring, carries some risk, and delivers a modest gain relative to everything listed here.

And copying a long list of launch options from a video description without understanding any of it is how people end up with a game that will not start.

Confirming it worked

Enable a frame rate display and pay attention to the low numbers rather than the peak.

A configuration that reaches an impressive figure and collapses during a fight is worse than one that sits lower and holds steady. The drop always arrives at the worst possible moment, because that is when the engine is under the most load.

Test during real matches with people and effects on screen, not on an empty map, and run for several minutes — thermal behaviour changes results over that timescale.
