How can you use IoT App Development Services in the game industry?

IoT growth is a formidable trend impacting all industries. The gaming industry is reaping benefits from it as well. With a professional IoT development company, an entrepreneur without an in-house team can create their own IoT game. With an abundance of existing devices, it is just a matter of skill and creativity to merge IoT and gaming. With the growing need for connected gaming experiences, iot development services enable seamless integration of smart devices, enhancing player engagement and immersion

Consider this: in 2024, 538 million wearables were sold worldwide. Contrast this with 2015, this figure was only 18 million units. This is almost 3,000% growth for IoT in less than a decade. The ultimate benefit lies in the competitive advantage game owners get from incorporating IoT. IoT represents a physical device, a tangible experience, and can connect to the collectible toy aspect. It always results in greater loyalty, higher lifetime value, and longer sessions.

Read on to learn more about how IoT can make games feel tangible and more exciting to discover possibilities for your new gaming startup.

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

IoT encompasses all devices such as sensors or actuators that are able to transmit data in real time. These data can be text, audio, image, or video. In daily life, these devices can be household items like thermostats and smart house systems. They can also be IoT wearables such as fitness bands, smart rings, or smart earrings. In addition, sensors are being embedded in clothes such as T-shirts or face masks.

As Mat Hatton, CEO and co-founder of Transforma Insights, put it:

“IoT is the next stage of the digital revolution. Everything that can be connected will be connected.”

Business Benefits of IoT in Gaming

Why is making an IoT game better than a regular game? Well, IoT games are completely different from a casual game segment. Casual games appeal to broad audiences requiring simply having a smartphone. Having a broad audience, they mostly make money from ads. For instance, Offline Games – No Wi-Fi games – a collection of 100+ simple games – make 250k in revenues a day from ads. About 30% of their users watched on average 3 ads. This success is incredible but rare and not long-lasting.

IoT games are different as they require users to have more hardware. It completely changes the target audiences as well as the revenue model. In IoT gaming, revenues are made from high lifetime value, loyalty, selling extras, and targeting a user base with higher purchasing power. For instance, immersive horror games measured 17.39 billion US dollars in 2024. This market is expected to grow up to 93.32 billion dollars in 2030 with a CAGR of 32.32%. IoT in gaming gives the sought-after benefits:

• It satisfies the evolving customers’ need for more immersive experiences;
• Game developers can benefit from existing sensors and their SDKs;
• Haptics are developing and trending;
• IoT devices are a growing trend as well;
• Having a physical device prompts users to come back and stay loyal.

All of these contribute significantly to the company’s bottom line.

Challenges of IoT in the Gaming Industry

On the flip side, IoT in gaming does not come without its share of difficulties. Three major challenges are discussed in the table below.

	Example	Challenge
1	If you use IoT wearables such as a fitness band, they must be synced with different band manufacturers. Or if you create a toy-to-life with a portal, it must connect to a console or desktop.	Compatibility across different platforms, sensors, and devices adds complexity to IoT game development
2	If your IoT game uses sensors that collect biometrics or user location, it must be protected.	Security and compliance with privacy laws and regulations require careful considerations
3	IoT means the need for devices. It limits the audience to those who have smart speakers, fitness bands, smart lights, etc. Sometimes custom hardware might be required.	Costs associated with IoT sensors and hardware might be high so a startup might need to resort to available IoT devices or make do with modular assembly from existing sensors

Impact of IoT on the Gaming Industry

Having mentioned the success of Offline Games – No-Wifi games, it is still vital to understand the contrasting revolutionary nature of IoT. IoT is reshaping markets, demand, and daily experiences in a variety of areas. Gaming is no different. User expectations, culture, markets, and daily behaviors evolve to include IoT in people’s lives. The impact is akin to the shift from newspapers to news websites: we all experience nostalgia about holding paper in our hands, but we do consume news digitally, importantly, even if we don’t always like it. IoT in the gaming industry is solidly moving toward ubiquity and the convenience of digital and IoT is unmatched.

IoT in the Gaming Industry: Technology Requirements

IoT can be integrated at different levels within a game. The minimalist approach is to integrate the existing sensors in smartphones, smartwatches, or AR/VR technologies, you can use:

• For console and desktops, Unity or Unreal Engine;
• For mobile games, you will need Swift for iOS and Kotlin/Java for Android;
• Depending on data processing needs, you might go for Python or Node.js for the backend;
• IoT Protocols and APIs include Bluetooth Low Energy, MQTT, WebSockets, Google ARCore or Apple ARKit, and Smart Home APIs.

If you go for a more IoT-heavy game including a higher number of sensors, custom hardware, wearables such as haptic suits and gloves, as well as greater performance, you’ll need:

• Custom IoY sensors for biometric tracking, motion detection, haptic feedback, and RFID/NFC;
• Edge computing with Raspberry Pi or NVIDIA Jetson;
• Embedded Programming with C or C++ for microcontrollers,
• Cloud platforms dedicated to IoT such as AWS IoT or Azure IoT Hub,
• Blockchain for security;
• LoRa or 5G & LPWAN for low-latency, wide-range communication.

Applications of IoT in the Gaming Industry

Mentioning above a growing trend for immersive horror games is an example. Imagine a game that can measure your pulse, control the lights in your house, and some smart speakers. Users seeking thrilling experiences will be sure to get chilling experiences keeping them on edge.

Another use case can be combining a fitness tracker into a game for points, which can blend nicely with RPGs. One more is that IoT-enabled toys and toys-to-life can now create much more exciting and immersive experiences.

Conclusion

IoT is a revolutionary technology. Similar to mobile phones in the past, it is going to become a ubiquitous commonplace occurrence. Many industries are incorporating it in their business models and similarly, the gaming industry can utilize it. Creating IoT games is a future-proof strategy that has multiple advantages over regular games. Some of IoT gaming benefits include increased LTV, higher loyalty, and longer player sessions.
