Gujarat is setting a powerful example in India’s renewable energy journey. Strong government support and smart policies drive the state towards a cleaner and greener future. The state ranks second in India for total solar energy capacity.

Besides solar and wind energy, Gujarat is also leading India’s Green Hydrogen Mission, introducing many innovative projects. Gujarat aims to reach 100GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

Policies and Ambitious Targets

The Gujarat Renewable Energy Policies 2023 include various projects, such as ground-mounted solar, rooftop solar, wind energy projects, floating solar, and wind-solar hybrid projects. The policy aims to simplify the procedure of implementing projects, which includes reducing the security deposit requirements.

The state-specific subsidy for rooftop solar and the Surya Urja Rooftop Yojana make it more affordable for residential and commercial use. Programs such as the Suryashakti Kisan Yojana support farmers in producing electricity through solar panels and selling extra energy to the grid, enhancing their earnings.

The Gujarat renewable energy sector is expected to receive investments of approximately 5 lakh crores. This project’s land utilization is expected to be around 400,000 acres. It can generate 36 GW of solar and 143 GW of wind energy. It will support solar, wind, and hybrid parks.

Gujarat aims to produce 30 lakh tonnes of green hydrogen each year. In the next 10-15 years, it has the potential to become a global exporter of green hydrogen, especially to Europe and East Asia.

Concentrate on Solar Energy

The state has many solar power plants, which makes it one of the most solar energy-producing states. Large-scale solar projects like Charanka Solar Park are also in Gujarat, which brought many private manufacturers together to create a solar energy hub.

Gujarat strongly promotes rooftop solar. It initiated the installation of solar panels for schools, businesses, and homes. Many leading companies, such as Adani Solar, Tata Power Solar, and Etrica Power, are playing a major role in expanding solar installations across the state. The state government is very much active in promoting the Surya Gujarat Scheme.

Focus on Wind and Hybrid Energy

Gujarat has the longest coastline in India, which makes it a perfect place for wind farms. The state is also exploring offshore wind energy, which is a clean and reliable energy source.

Along with this, it is also focusing on hybrid energy projects. These hybrid energy systems produce more energy because when the sun is not shining due to bad weather conditions, wind can take over, and the opposite is also true.

The state has launched special policies to make the best use of the land for using solar-wind hybrid plants.

Initiative for Green Hydrogen

Gujarat is working towards becoming a major center for producing and selling green hydrogen. The state has started a green hydrogen policy for investments by companies.

Reliance Industries, Adani group, NTPC, and many other big names are ready to invest in the hydrogen plants. They are establishing plants to produce green energy, which can be used in vehicles, power industries, or even exported to other countries.

Gujarat has started building a park on about 2 lakh hectares for renewable energy. This project seeks to position the state as a major center for green hydrogen, with an annual production goal of 30 lakh tonnes.

The project will help reduce carbon emissions, and it is set to provide economic advantages by creating job opportunities and enhancing industrial growth.

Improving Energy Options

Solar power generation is dependent on sunlight, but the problem is that it is not possible 24/7. To solve this, Gujarat is now looking for energy storage technologies.

The state is also focusing on battery storage and hydro storage solutions to improve renewable energy projects. With this technology, we can store the excess amount of power in the battery in peak production hours and use it when demand is high, like at night and in power cut situations. For this, we can easily cut down the fossil fuel-based backup system.

Example of why Gujarat is Leading

Along with the large-scale solar projects, Gujarat is setting an example by becoming the first to implement innovative solutions like the canal top solar power plant. This project involves placing solar panels above the Narmada Canal to produce electricity and decrease water evaporation at the same time.

The state makes land easily available, has strong electricity networks, and gives good financial support to bring more renewable energy companies.

Gujarat tops the list with attractive investments of over 1.17 lakh crore, which is nearly a one-third investment on an all-India basis, 2020 to 2024 data. As of February 2025, it has achieved a remarkable renewable energy capacity of 32,924 MW.

Conclusion

Gujarat is dominating India’s renewable energy journey. The state made it attractive for investors and citizens to choose solar energy because of the good policies, easy approvals, and financial incentives.

It is not only meeting its own energy needs but also helping India move closer to its natural renewable energy targets.  The state is focusing on clean energy and reducing the use of fossil fuels, which are harmful to the environment in the long run. With smart planning and strong actions, Gujarat is heading to a cleaner and greener future for all of India.
