Immigration is a critical issue in the US public and political arena. It is often one of the campaign key points in every election. Hence, the immigration issue remains an unending debate in the American space.

The Joe Biden-led administration has recently considered ways to grant tentative legal status and work permits to illegal immigrants who are married to American citizens. As noted in the preceding paragraph, some stakeholders believe this move could strengthen some Democrats as the November elections approach.

The Stance of Democrats on Immigration

Advocacy groups and Democratic legislators have appealed to Joe Biden to protect illegal immigrants in the US decisively. This pressure comes amidst the Biden-led administration’s decision to control irregular border crossings drastically.

Democrats and advocates believe the government should protect those already in the country.

The Nexus Between Immigration and Politics

While the Democrats and advocacy groups pressure the President to protect irregular immigrants in the country, Republicans believe otherwise. Thus, this issue has generated a lot of debate ahead of the November 5 polls.

Republican candidate, former President Donald Trump, has consistently criticized Biden’s immigration policies. He affirmed that the latter’s less restrictive policies have contributed significantly to the rise of illegal migration.

Despite Biden formally stepping down from the presidential race and his party nominating his vice, Kamala Harris, immigration remains a central discourse in the electioneering. Trump believes Harris will continue with Biden’s less restrictive policies. This assumption may not be unconnected with Harris’ recent appeal to give illegal immigrants citizenship “immediately.”

As the elections draw nearer, the leading actors will make their stance on immigration more transparent. This will help American voters understand the implications of each candidate’s policies on their everyday lives. “Immigration remains a political discourse in every election cycle because it affects the soul of the economy,” says Mario Godoy of Godoy Law Office Immigration Lawyers

The Government’s Considerations

Despite the politicking surrounding this illegal immigration, the government must still make a policy statement about it. Hence, the Biden government has recently considered enacting an executive action to dissuade migrants from the US-Mexico border once the crossings reach a given limit.

However, this planned action has not gone down well with several Democrats and advocacy groups. They believe the government wants to deny the immigrants their rights.

The Plans in Place

To show its commitment to controlling illegal immigration, the government is considering using a “parole in place” for lovers of United States citizens. This tentative status would help such persons gain work permits and simultaneously serve as a path to citizenship.

However, internal sources revealed that the government has not set a timeline for implementing this plan. They have not finalized the plan as the government is still exploring other plausible actions. A White House spokesperson confirmed this, observing that the government constantly weighs “possible policy options.”

The Situation at Hand

Over a million illegal immigrants in the country are married to citizens, based on the statistics from FWD.us, an advocacy group.

In 2023, select Democrat legislators appealed to the executive branch by writing to President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to protect US citizens’ spouses and urging the executive branch to ensure a reunification system for those outside the US.

Many of those concerned are already speaking up. Some lamented that their spouses are still illegal in the country despite living in the US for over two decades. They expressed the fear and trauma they constantly live in.

Final Words

Immigration is a dicey issue. The laws and policies governing it constantly evolve. However, if you believe the government or its agency has trampled on your fundamental rights as an immigrant, quickly speak with a reputable local immigration law attorney for onward actions.
