In 2023, select Democrat legislators appealed to the executive branch by writing to President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to protect US citizens’ spouses and urging the executive branch to ensure a reunification system for those outside the US. 

Many of those concerned are already speaking up. Some lamented that their spouses are still illegal in the country despite living in the US for over two decades. They expressed the fear and trauma they constantly live in.
